The California-Southern Miss football game scheduled for Thursday night
has been postponed because of Hurricane Ivan. No makeup date has been
announced. USM athletic officials had hoped to wait until Tuesday morning
before deciding whether to try and play the game, but Cal officials posted
a release on the school’s Web site today saying the Golden Bears aren’t
coming.

Connecticut needed a field goal with 3:40 to play along with a missed
21-yard field goal by Duke in the closing seconds to eke out a 22-20 win
over the Blue Devils last week. The Huskies squandered many opportunities
to get into the end zone and QB Dan Orlovsky threw an interception that
Duke returned 62 yards for a touchdown. Uconn must have been looking ahead
to this game ? its first Big East contest – but it will have to play a lot
smarter to come out of this one with a win. Boston College had an
impressive performance in a 21-7 win over Penn State as Paul Peterson
threw for 199 yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles had to use their
backup running back but Andre Callender came through with 114 yards on 27
carries. The victory followed a lackluster win against Ball State in the
season opener while the defense held the Nittany Lions to 73 rushing yards
on 21 carries and intercepted QB Zack Mills four times. Boston College has
beaten Uconn three straight including a 24-14 decision on the road last
season. The Eagles superior defensive play so far this season and the home
field will be the difference in this contest, but it won’t be a rout.
UConn is 7-5 SU, 10-2 ATS on the road the last two seasons!

If the Michigan Wolverines ever want to win another “national
championship”, maybe they had better consider avoiding Notre Dame and
anyone from the PAC-10. For the fifth straight year, Lloyd Carr’s troops
saw their dreams of a perfect season go up in smoke early. Notre Dame has
now turned the trick twice in the last three years, while Oregon,
Washington and UCLA were the respective culprits in the other three
campaigns. Among the five first losses of the season, last week’s defeat
at South Bend was the first time that Michigan was favored by more than a
touchdown, making it the biggest surprise of the bunch. Now the Wolverines
will have to focus on winning the Big Ten if they are to land one of the
BCS bowl invites…and San Diego State isn’t in the Big Ten. While the
Aztecs are not considered a powerhouse, they have a few things going for
them here. SD State had last week off to game plan for what is clearly a
big opportunity for them to garner national attention. The Aztecs did very
well in a trip to Big 10 country last season, barely coming up short in a
three point loss at Ohio State. SD State is also considered by mosts
analysts to be an improved entry this year. They got off to a good start
with the 38-21 win over Idaho State, a game in which the Aztecs led 38-0
before emptying the bench in the fourth quarter. As for Michigan, they
aren’t running the ball well and the QB play has been unsteady. Plus, with
Michigan’s goal now the Big 10 title, next week’s revenge game vs. Iowa is
a much bigger game. The scheduling dynamics clearly favor the underdog
here, and with San Diego State looking to be a pretty solid team
defensively, taking those huge points seems to me to be a great play!
Projected Score: Michigan 17, San Diego St 10

Quarterback problems are plaguing both Western Michigan and Illinois as
they head into Saturday’s contest at Champaign. Western Michigan lost
starter Blayne Baggett to injured ribs in the first quarter of the 63-0
annihilation suffered at Virginia Tech. Ryan Cubit stepped in to complete
18 of 29 passes, but for only 121 yards with an interception. One thing is
certain, and this is that neither Baggett nor Cubit is even close to
graduated starter Chad Munson. QB Blayne Baggett (ribs) is questionable to
play. The Broncos don’t run the ball very effectively, either, so don’t
look for a lot of offense here, even against a suspect Illinois defense.
As for the Illni, they also lost their number one signal caller in
Saturday’s home loss to UCLA. Jon Beutjer went out with bruised ribs and a
sternum injury against the Bruins. He hopes to be able to play this
weekend, but if he cannot, the task will fall to redshirt freshman Brad
Bower. Against the Bruins, Bower threw for 102 yards and ran for another
39. He should have little trouble improving on those numbers vs. the lowly
Broncos. The main task for Illinois is to not dwell on the disappointing
defeat to UCLA. This is certainly a game that Illinois should win and it’s
difficult to envision an upset taking place if they take the field with
the right mindset.

Kent
Rutgers 12 12Ѕ 12Ѕ
Senior quarterback Joshua Cribbs returned from a one-game suspension to
lead Kent State to a 38-10 win over Division I-AA Liberty following a 39-7
loss at Iowa. The Golden Flashes ran for 201 yards on 37 carries including
105 yards by Cribbs who also completed 20-of-29 for 144 yards with one
interception. Kent returns 16 starters but one always has to be careful
when a MAC team looks great against weak competition and then goes up
against a major conference foe and gets outclassed as witnessed by Ohio
University last week vs Pittsburgh. Rutgers suffered a major letdown after
its opening-week win against Michigan State as it lost at home to Division
I-AA team New Hampshire 35-24. Quarterback Ryan Hart finished 30-of-50 for
307 yards and two touchdowns but the Scarlet Knight defense had no answer
for Ricky Santos who completed 23-of-34 for 357 yards and five touchdowns
for the Wildcats. This battle has all the makings of a high-scoring
contest but the edge goes to Rutgers to bounce back from an embarrassing
loss. Kent has the offense to hang in there, but remember that Rutgers is
9-3 ATS its last 12 home games.
Projected Score: Rutgers 37, Kent 28

Cent Florida
Penn St 22 22Ѕ 22Ѕ
Penn State was a major flop for many bettors last Saturday as they fell at
Boston College. The Lions opened as two point dogs vs. the Eagles, and
closed as four point favorites. That’s a huge line move, and one that
worked beautifully for the house as Penn State stumbled to 21-7 loss. The
Lions were their own worst enemy in this one, as they did themselves in
with turnovers and penalties. Plus, the lack of a running game forced them
to become one dimensional and things went downhill from there. It’s clear
that legendary head coach Joe Paterno needs to use this game as an
opportunity to balance the offense. Zack Mills had to throw 42 times last
week, and that’s at least 12 more pass attempts than the Lions want on
average. But those writing off the Lions off the poor showing at BC might
want to rethink their stance. This is a pretty good squad that will be a
tough opponent for most Big 10 competition this season, and they should
succeed Saturday against what could be a worn down and one dimensional
Central Florida unit. The Golden Knights have had to go back to back
against huge offensive lines, and while they have shown lots of fight,
this looms as a tough trip. On offense, UCF is basically the Alex Haynes
show. The star senior RB is looking good, and put up impressive numbers
last week in the respectable loss to West Virginia. But the Knights still
couldn’t pass the ball. Neither Brandon Sumner nor Steven Moffett has
stood out in UCF’s start, and it won’t get much easier at Happy Valley
Saturday. HC George O’Leary has definitely improved the attitude of this
team in his first two games at the helm, but the talent level just isn’t
good enough for UCF to compete in road games against this type. Look for
Penn State to coast to a lopsided win.
Projected Score: Penn St 37, Cent Florida 10

Duke
Virginia Tech 27Ѕ 28 28
It’s no secret what Duke does: They are a young, rebuilding team that
prefers to run/control the ball. Duke lost 27-12 at Navy and put up a
fight last week, losing 22-20 at UConn as a +15 dog. So, yes, this will be
Duke’s third straight road game! The defense hasn’t played as well as the
final scores might suggest. Last week Duke gave up 461 yards to UConn (290
passing, 171 rushing). New offensive coordinator Marty Galbraith is
working in two starting QBs in senior Chris Dapolito and sophomore Mike
Schneider. Both played against UConn and Duke’s offense had just 252 yards
(only 68 rushing). The stats suggest they should have lost by a far
greater margin. Duke went 1-4 SU/3-2 ATS on the road in 2003 where it was
outscored by a 29-12 average. It doesn’t get any easier here. Virginia
Tech has an offense that can run and pass with great efficiency under
experienced and versatile QB Bryan Randall. V-Tech is averaging 38 points
and 390 total yards thus far (1-1). This is also their second straight
home game. The Hokies started 4-1 ATS last season, getting easy wins as
double digit favorites in every game. The lone bright spot for the
visitors is that Duke is 14-8 ATS as a dog since 2002.
Projected Score: Virginia Tech 39, Duke 16

W Virginia 6Ѕ 6Ѕ 6Ѕ
Maryland has beaten the Mountaineers four times in the last three seasons
by a combined score of 155-51 including a 41-7 shellacking in the Gator
Bowl last season. The Terrapins are 27-12 ATS since coach Ralph Friedgen
took over in 2001 but this year they only return nine starters and escaped
with a three-point home win against Northern Illinois in the opener before
pounding Temple by a 45-22 score. Joel Statham finished 18-of-25 for 268
yards and two touchdowns and the Terps gained 203 yards on the ground on
49 carries. Statham had a disastrous game vs Northern Illinois when he
fumbled four times and threw an interception. West Virginia is off two big
wins against mediocre competition including last week?s 45-20 win at
Central Florida. The Mountaineers have accumulated 1,081 yards of total
offense in their first two games and Rasheed Marshall was nearly perfect
vs the Owls as he completed 14 of 18 passes for 225 yards and four
touchdowns. The defense returns eight starters but this will be its first
major test of the season. This one goes to the wire in a high-scoring
contest with the Mountaineers finally prevailing.
Projected Score: W Virginia 35, Maryland 32

Indiana
Kentucky 1 1 1
This game is normally fantastic when it is played at Rupp Arena in
January. Unfortunately, this Indiana versus Kentucky is not basketball,
but football. Alas, Indiana shocked the world last week by traveling to
Oregon and quacking the Ducks on their pond, 30-24 SU. Don’t be fooled by
the game, Indiana got SEVEN turnovers from the Ducks. Statistically, the
Hoosiers (2-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) were dismal. QB, Matt LoVecchio was only 6 for
18, 71 yards. Indiana only converted 3 out of 18 on 3rd down. As a team,
the Hoosiers had 198 total yards. Now you know why the coaches always tell
the girl reporter before the game that they must win the turnover battle.
The Hoosiers caught the Ducks flat for their opening game and walked away
with a W. Kentucky (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) has had a week off after getting
dismantled by Louisville, 28-0 SU. This game will be UK’s rare opportunity
to get a W this year, especially if their QB’s continue to go 14 for 34
every week. Traditionally, this game is all about points. The last seven
years, one side has scored more than 25 points. Last year, UK won easily
at IU, 34-17 SU. This will be a great game if IU can rebound at the guard,
??..Oh sorry! Hoosiers may be a little flat after their enormous win last
week and from the travel. Close and mistakes-o-plenty!
Projected Score: Kentucky 20, Indiana 17

Vanderbilt 44Ѕ
Mississippi 7 7 7
Have we convinced you yet that Ole Miss will struggle this season? Alabama
spanked Ole Miss 28-7 SU. Ole Miss (0-2 SU, 0-2 ATS) is desperate for
offensive answers. Eli replacement, Michael Spurlock, has simply not risen
to the challenge. He was just 5 for 15 for 56 yards before they finally
yanked him. For the season, Spurlock is just 16 for 46 for 236 yards. Ole
Miss has nothing but headaches on offense and defense as they head into a
home clash with Vanderbilt (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS). It is important to mention
that weather is going to be a tremendous factor in this game, as it
appears that Hurricane Ivan is going to hit the Gulf and move inland right
through Louisiana and Mississippi. Last season, aka with Manning, Ole Miss
squeaked by Vandy 24-21 SU. The past five years this game has been usually
close, each contest has been decided by 8 points or less. In their opener,
Vandy got thrashed by South Carolina 31-6 SU, but has had some time to
improve and will be competitive in this one. It also appears that South
Carolina is not that bad, just ask Georgia. Vandy should look to stuff an
already anemic running game (just 75 yards last week) and force Ole Miss
to complete some forward passes. Right now, Ole Miss couldn’t complete a
sentence if they were spotted the punctuation mark. Sounds like a decent
game plan if you look at the stats!
Projected Score: Vanderbilt 17, Mississippi 14

Stan Van Gundy Rips The Palace crowd

Van Gundy’s rip of The Palace crowd, security was an unfair and ill-timed
diatribe.

By Bob Wojnowski / The Detroit News

Robin Buckson / The Detroit News

Heat coach Stan Van Gundy: “I think (in) Detroit and New York, you get
some of the absolute nastiest people. They’re not just loud. Those people
will say anything and do anything.”

AUBURN HILLS–This is why the NBA shouldn’t allow three off-days between
playoff games. It gives nitwits like Stan Van Gundy too much time to talk.

The guy who looks like a 1970s vacuum-cleaner salesman blew hot air the
other day, lumping Pistons fans with New York fans as “the absolute
nastiest people.” He referenced The Palace brawl. He ripped the arena’s
security. He sounded, as quoted in two Miami-area newspapers, like someone
pouting that Larry Brown was getting all the attention in the Eastern
Conference finals.

Clever move, Stan. You’ll surely get the attention tonight, when Miami
visits the Pistons for Game 3. We haven’t heard such a poorly timed,
foolishly executed rant from an NBA coach since, well, since your brother
Jeff unleashed his unnamed referee conspiracy beauty during the
Houston-Dallas series.

What is it with the Flying Van Gundys? And what is it about the Pistons
and their fans that makes everyone around the league so darn squirrelly?

Is it really fear? Or maybe jealousy? If it’s not the Bad Boys era being
denigrated, it’s the current champs being derided. If it’s not Ron Artest
leaping into the stands, it’s Charles Barkley mocking the latest title. If
it’s not a Miami columnist splattering Detroit with tired, ugly cliches,
it’s a pot-bellied Van Gundy taking pot shots (right back at you, fella).

I’ve always believed the disrespect angle gets overused around here, but
I’m beginning to wonder. Enough is enough with the lopsided commentary on
Detroit already. Cripes.

And Pistons fans are supposed to accept behavior criticism from a guy who
coaches in Miami, one of the lamest sports cities in America?

“I think (in) Detroit and New York, you get some of the absolute nastiest
people,” Van Gundy said Friday. “They’re not just loud. Those people will
say anything and do anything. … It’s always sort of funny to look around
in the stands and see somebody sitting with their 10-year-old kid yelling
profanities at you. I always thought, ‘That was a great role model.’”

Good point. A much better role model is an NBA coach who jumps up to swear
at a referee when Dwyane Wade is called for a foul.

Listen. No one condones profanity. Obviously, no one condones the
ridiculous acts that led to the Nov. 19 Palace brawl, which I contend
could have occurred in any arena with zealous fans. By its very nature,
passion can cross the line, and Detroit sports fans are among the most
passionate.

But really, what’s the point in dredging old news now? We were just
starting to get warmed up with fresh Brown-leaving-town speculation —
nothing shocking there, by the way — when Van Gundy spoke.

“Hey, what other arena did somebody throw beer on somebody?” Van Gundy
said. “… I don’t think their security people cared. The (brawl) worked
out great for them, to be quite honest. … Detroit’s a different place.
It just is.”

Of course it is. And Detroit’s image always makes it an easy target. But
even if Van Gundy believes everything he said, what’s the logic behind
recklessly inciting fans right before bringing his team here? Is this some
weird psychological ploy only he can decipher?

By Saturday, Van Gundy was less effusive but didn’t backtrack. He said he
didn’t want to revisit the topic but expected the crowd to be loud. I
wonder, after two games in Miami’s passive setting, if Van Gundy simply
realized the size of the disadvantage.

The atmosphere at The Palace these last two playoff runs has been great,
and incident-free. In today’s tepid professional sports, it’s an
atmosphere worth celebrating. To be fair, if hecklers near the visitor’s
bench ever get vulgar, security should step in.

But every city uses what it has. Miami has a scorching sun and a fake,
soft fan base, which makes it attractive to athletes and coaches less
eager to embrace pressure. Detroit has noisy passion and hard-core
loyalty, which makes it attractive to certain athletes and coaches, and
annoying to visitors.

“That’s a compliment that other coaches around the league worry about
coming in here,” Chauncey Billups said. “It’s not only because of our team
but because of our fans, how loud they are and how rowdy they are. They
got a right to do that as a fan. You don’t have a right to put your hands
on anybody or throw anything, but you got a right to enjoy yourself.”

We’re not sure why Van Gundy appears so frightened. The Pistons aren’t
invincible at home, 5-1 in the playoffs and 32-9 during the regular
season. And trust us, Stan. For every heckler who makes fun of your
mustache, there are at least 100 Palace high-brows content to simply cheer
and swirl their mixed drinks.

The Pistons were going to be fired up tonight anyhow because they believe
they blew Game 2. They believe it so deeply, we wondered if they actually
gained confidence from the game, won nearly single-handedly by Wade.

It wouldn’t be wise for the Pistons to just assume they’re still in
control. Shaquille O’Neal could be a bigger factor with three days rest.
And Alonzo Mourning could be relevant again after a much-needed break from
all that muscle-flexing at the Pistons.

We’re guessing Tayshaun Prince will be one inspired defender tonight, and
Billups won’t duplicate his sloppy first half. We figure the Pistons will
rebound as they usually do. And we figure the crowd might be a tad louder,
thanks to Stan.

“That’s the wrong thing to say,” Rasheed Wallace said. “That just gives
fuel to the fire. I know our fans are going to make it hectic for them.”

That’s what they do, and so far in the playoffs, everyone is doing what
they do. Referees call few fouls one night and a ton the next. Shaq
hobbles. Brown dodges speculation. And right on cue, a Van Gundy says
something dumb.

19-9 +$950 YTD

Going with a couple of early plays and maybe some later depending on how these go.

Each of the following for one unit:

Alabama -15 Arkansas

Three things to fall back on here.  Arkansas’ defense sucks and Alabama’s offense is balanced and can take advantage of it.  Arkansas’ offense sucks and Alabama’s defense is very good.  Arkansas’s special teams suck and I don’t know about ‘Bama’s but it can’t be worse than Arkansas.  PUt it all together and you get 41-13 Alabama win.

Purdue +4 -120 Minnesota
Tiller’s defense is ready to stop Minnesota’s big running game.  Like them with the extra point here to ensure  a win.

(5 unit Top Play) Nevada -4.5  over my beloved Warriors.  Yes we need this game like a MF, but alas, we suck on the road, & probably will for the rest of the season, & the first few next season.  I see us getting absolutely rocked today.

(4 unit Top Play) Tennessee +9.5 over Notre Dame.  This is just the spot where Tennessee burns all the bettors & wins this game straight up, or loses in the final minutes…I’ll take the generous points versus the public’s favorite today.

(3 unit play)  Penn St. -12 over Wisky.  On the surface this # seems crazy, but dig a little deeper & you’ll see why.  Penn St. has been $$ at home all year, & things won’t suddenly change here.  Wisky D will get manhandled at the line today, & I think The Lions will put up a 40 spot & win going away.

Good luck guys!  ~HT

2 Baseball Picks

MLB: Kansas City at Texas -Rangers -1.5 -120 (De La Rosa/Millwood)
PLATINUM PICK
The Rangers have dropped 5 straight but it is time to get back on track and this combination of things is just right for that. A combination of a lot of things has led to their demise recently and mainly due to the quality of competition. Last night a horrible loss at home to these Royals and you can believe that the lockeroom was not a nice place to be. With Millwood on the mound today they should exude more confdence and they will face a pitcher who has not worked in quite a while as a starter and one that when he did, did not fair very well at all. The Rangers have explosive bats and they have faired well with lefties this year with a strong righthanded hitting lineup. Millwood is the Go To Guy when Texas needs a win and they certainly do need one today. Bullpens are a huge favorite for the Rangers too so don’t expect any KC relief when De La Rosa hits the bench. This one should be coast to coast EZ.

MLB: St Louis at Chicago- Cardinals -125 (Reyes/Maddux)
PLATINUM PICK
We are going to see a focused Cardinal Team today with 2 losses to these Cubs the last 2 days. The Cardinals have been one heck of a bounceback team in recent years at 115-60 and they are in double mode for today’s games. Speaking of Day game, the Cards are also 29-10 when playing under the sunshine and that is despite yesterday’s loss. There is a huge system in play today as well that shows that a team with a winning record playing one without a winning record and 2 consecutive losses by 1 run, results in a win just over 74% of the time dating back 6 years. Maybe St Louis has taken the Cubbies too lightly, but they will not today. Neither one of these pitchers are throwing very well of late but I really do not think it will matter. The Cards will score today and very often.

Will the Eagles soar tonite?? ck it out–

7:30pm-*BOSTON COLLEGE vs V.T. Hokies
New England in the fall season is a sightseeing delight and lures many tourists to view the multicolored leaves as they drift slowly to the ground. Now moving into the suburb of Boston and the campus of Boston College at Chestnut Hill with Alumni Stadium, the hospitality stops at the parking lot for visiting teams. Tonite, the well-coached Hokies will amble thru that parking lot in an hour or so—both teams are off a “bye” week~~~sooo, no edge there. Hokies (4-1, 2-1) are coming off a 38-27 home loss to No. 13 Georgia Tech on Sept. 30—ten days to mull it over and regroup—ahhh, but, look what the data-banks show—so far this season they have had a punt, two extra points & a field goal blocked ! Running game “aint what she used-to-be”. Eagles junior qb Ryan more game experience then counterpart sophomore Ryan who 66 yards passing in last road start. Home dawg Eagles (+ 2 Ѕ ) glide to a Thursday nite cover~~~
ps-f/y/i–Webster dictionary—(so i don’t get laid out for bashing—)
“hokey-adj-corny; also phony” did that influence the pick? Nahhh, I’m a New England guy and went to college in Massachusetts–a little levity—
anybody here go to school at VT? Wonda if the students know that–??
110/100 3 Ѕ *** rating

*AIR FORCE played our Naval Academy Cadets last week The Fly-Boy Cadets have to be a little drained/tired– Colorado State Cowboys come-in and they too, are used to the venture of playing .
at high altitude—Rams Coach Lubick knows how to defend the option; Ram qb Hanie 23 of 28 completions vs UNLV—Play is on the visitors at +6 (1x) and ML +200 for Ѕ unit.
110/100
50/55 4 ****

last ncaa post Saturday 0-4 yea, naked–that’s haaaard to do—-ehmm, even with levity writeups
ok guys; Peace to U and U’rs in these troubled world times— gl, however u go—

one board play for the board*

Since they want us to keep a record and I can’t. I guess capicorns are just unorganized ( I just can’t do it). Or it could be the fact I play a ton of games and only post a few. So I will post one play a day. Maybe and I mean maybe I can keep track.

Has I said yesterday I got off my early college plays. The lines were moving the othe way and today even more so on the hawaii game ( like I said then. I am not afraid to pay juice to get off a game and get a possible middle).

So here is the play. I will start a new record today. Wish me look.
