Are you ready for some football????????????

When I look at the early lines for Sunday, I see
numbers that are based largely on past performance and
bad memory. And as always, public perception. I prefer
to open the year with these unproven commodities on a
“Wait and See” basis, since NFLX tells us nothing
except who WON’T be around for the season. New
players, new coaches and new intensity will create
some situations that most would not have expected
before the season started. With all that going on,
let’s get to the best opportunities for the first week
of action with one qualifier: I ALWAYS buy off 3 and
7, with some exceptions for 4, 6 and 10. Also
situations will arise where I buy off TOTALS at 34, 41
and 44. An asterisk denotes where I have added and .5
in my favor and recommend you do as well.

2** San Diego Chargers -4*

The Cowboys are coming into the opener with an unusual
attitude… yes, they want to win and Parcells will
coach as though it is a big game. however, he has said
that he wants to look at several players in different
roles to get them ready for the MNF Division Opener
next week against the hated Redskins. While every game
is important, non-conference road openers carry less
importance than conference and division games.
One problem for Dallas is that they are in the process
of changing over to the 3-4 defense, which requires
bulk and brawn up front, with quick and nimble
linebackers and secondary behind you. The three down
linemen are the ones that occupy the gaps and allow
the linebackers to make plays. Unfortunately, the
Cowboys don’t have the brawn and bulk available to
pull it off right now. Jason Ferguson was brought over
from the Jets to plug the line and was terrific at his
job in New York. In fact, it was a big reason that I
will play against the Jets in a few situations this
year, as losing Jason in Free Agency was a truly
crippling blow to stopping the run and protecting the
weak Jets secondary. That’s a story for another day,
however.
Back in Dallas, Ferguson was dinged in preseason and
will see limited action on Sunday. That leaves an
undersized 290 pound LaRoi’ Glover playing the nose,
and the massive SD offensive line will manhandle the
smallish Cowboy front. This will mean that LT will
have daylight in the ground game on several occasions
and open up chances in the passing game for Brees.
With a statue for a QB in Drew Bledsoe who holds the
ball until he sees his shadow, look for the Chargers
to open the season by controlling both lines of
scrimmage and shutting down Julius Jones, forcing Drew
to look for his aging WR group and throw into
coverage, creating turnovers. Granted, the Charger
pass defense was ranked 30th last year, but they also
play in a conference that airs the ball out and a
division with quality QB’s. The NFC East is a ground
based offensive scheme to compensate for the weather
conditions in winter games. Bledsoe and the Cowboy
offense are not capable of stretching the field and
taking advantage of the Chargers weakness. Parcells
has also stated that he will be rotating centers in
this game, so look for an opportunity to get some
turnovers in the QB/Center exchange for Dallas and
providing positive field position for San Diego and a
short drive for points. Dallas is a disaster in this
role, going 2-13 ats on the road vs. the AFC. The only
concern is the one game suspension of TE Antonio
Gates, a big part of the Chargers O. They may not need
him with LT running to daylight.

When they got the ball back with about 6 mins left, down 10, they seemed
as if it was they that were leading. At this juncture in the game, down
10, if you want to be able to kick the ball deep and not feel like you
have to onside kick the ball, you much score before the 2:30 mark.
Instead, the scored with under 2 mins and had to onside kick the ball.
Inspite of a valiant Eagle stand and two timeouts, because of field
position after the onside kick, ne was able to punt the ball down to the
four. With no timouts left, and 60 yard to go for a field goal and about
45 secs just does not cut it.

Reid and his staff should have given the Eagles as better chance to win
this game.

After looking at this game for an hour, I just cant justify playing
UCONN. I had originally planned on playing them -11, but over 80% of the
play is coming on UCONN and the line isnt moving. I like UCONN for a
couple of reasons. They are rested. GTown was in a tough game. GTown
is young, and young teams have a hard time playing with intensity two
games in a row, especially when they dont play two nights straight during
the season. GTown has some huge forwards, but UCONN does too. Difference
is UCONN are talented. Villenueva can rebound AND score in the paint. I
am playing the game for a half unit, but not an official play.

anything today. I’m going to lay off most of the Seattle bet if Fla.
comes thru. But, love the Marlins over the LH Claussen as Fla. hit’s
Lefties better than any other Nat’l club. Claussen Last Year was 2 – 8
with a 6.14 era in 14 starts. Nothing else to say. Seattle shouldn’t be
swept at home by Clev. especially not by Elarton who has a 7.90 ERA so far
this year. I have been doing well going against bad pitchers so far but
Seattle is a very weak hitting club right now that makes this a
questionable bet.

Mercedes Stables’ and Madeline Picken’s ROCK HARD TEN (Kris S.) has been taken out of contention for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) after trainer Richard Mandella discovered blood and a bruise on the four-year-old’s right front foot. The detection came soon after he galloped Friday morning over Belmont Park’s main track. Mandella discovered a bruise in Rock Hard Ten’s left front foot last week which delayed shipping plans until Wednesday.
