First Post, been following a lot lately…

Just wanted to say thank you for some of the posters on here. I’ve
followed some picks everyone seemed to be on and have won a little the
past few nights. About 2 years ago I lost a lot of money gambling like an
idiot. I’m trying to be more controlled now and have won about 2% of what
I lost before the last week. But, I’m winning, that’s all that matters!
Thanks again. I have gone 7-3 the past few nights with combining peoples
picks. Tonight, I’ll start from scratch and see how I do:

Marist -4 (4 units) too good to be true with everyone on them?

Suns -6 (2 units)

Nuggets ML (2 units)

Sonics -5.5 (2 units)

Raptors -3 (2 units)

Good luck to everyone, let’s win some cash!

WTF – Yankees get Shawn Chacon

The New York Yankees agreed to acquire pitcher Shawn Chacon from the
Colorado Rockies for a pair of minor-leaguers on Thursday night, filling
the opening in their injury-ravaged rotation, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark has
learned.

In exchange for Chacon, a 27-year-old right-hander, the Rockies get Ramon
Ramirez and Edwardo Sierra.

New York and Colorado were in the process of finalizing the trade and
planned to announce it later Thursday.

Chacon was an All-Star for the Rockies in 2003, when he had 11 wins at the
All-Star break. But he didn’t get another victory and finished 11-8 with a
4.60 ERA.

Colorado moved him to the bullpen the following year and while he had 35
saves, he also had nine blown saves to go along with a 1-9 record and a
7.11 ERA. He is 1-7 with a 4.09 ERA this year in 12 starts and one relief
appearance.

His last outing was Sunday at Pittsburgh, and the Yankees hope to start
him Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels.

“It is hard to put it out of your mind,” Chacon said of trade rumors after
a loss at Washington on July 19. “It is hard not to think about it.”

The Yankees were in desperate need of pitching help after Kevin Brown went
on the disabled list for the 14th time in his career. The pitcher will go
to California to be examined by back expert Dr. Robert Watkins.

Brown has a lumbar strain, according to the Yankees. Watkins operated on
Brown in June 2002 to repair a disc in the nerve canal of the pitcher’s
lower back, and the Yankees are unsure whether Brown will be sidelined for
the rest of the season.

“Hopefully in the next 24, 48 hours we’ll have more of a clue to that,”
Yankees manager Joe Torre said before New York beat Minnesota 6-3.
“Hopefully that’s not the case because I know that’s certainly not what he
wants, and it’s certainly not what we want or need. But, as I say, his
physical well being is No. 1 here. I really — I don’t know what the
answer is. I have to really get the doctors to tell me.”

Brown, 40, is 4-7 with a 6.50 ERA in 13 starts this season. The five-time
All-Star was on the DL from April 3-17 and June 18-July 18 with a strained
back, then returned this month without a rehab start and allowed 13 runs
in 7 2/3 innings during starts at Texas and the Los Angeles Angels. He was
examined by Dr. Yechiel Kleen in Colorado, who spoke this week with
Yankees physician Dr. Stuart Hershon.

“He’s bothered by this whole thing because first off, he obviously wants
to help here,” Torre said. “But secondly, he’s not well at this point in
time.”

Brown has been on the DL 10 times since December 1998, when he was given a
$105 million, seven-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who traded
him to the Yankees in December 2002. He was 41-19 in his first three years
after signing the first $100 million deal in baseball history but has gone
31-26 since.

New York made the roster move retroactive to July 24, the day after
Brown’s last appearance. The Yankees did not immediately fill the roster
spot, debating whether to bring up a pitcher or a position player.

Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre said if New York doesn’t acquire a starter,
a string of relievers could be used Saturday against the Angels.

“We’ll probably, if we have to, we’ll treat it like a spring training
game,” he said. “You try to pitch two or three guys two or three innings
each unless something happens by Saturday.”

With Brown sidelined along with Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright and Chien-Ming
Wang, who all have shoulder injuries, New York has brought up Aaron Small
and acquired Al Leiter to join Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina in the
rotation. Hideo Nomo, signed to a minor-league contract this week, needs
work and won’t be available this weekend, Torre said.

Pavano made his first injury rehabilitation start Wednesday and will make
at least one more.

“He wants to get back here like everybody does when they go to Tampa for a
period of time and have to deal 95, 100 [degrees] every day,” Torre said.

Wright, out since April, is scheduled to make his first rehab start
Saturday. Outfielder Ruben Sierra, who has a strained left hamstring, is
likely to start a rehab assignment this weekend. The earliest he could be
activated is Wednesday.

AFC-NFC

Does anyone think that the disparity between conferences has shrunk?

That is the only way I give credence to the idea of taking Oak over Philly, not straight up but, with the points.

Look what happened in Green Bay where a crappy AFC team goes to a team that is considered a mediocre NFC and gets a win.

Other than Philly, Atlanta or Carolina is there really any NFC with a serious shot a winning the conference, much less the Super Bowl?

When handicapping, you should always take that into consideration.

Just my opinion, but the feature that sends a post back to the top upon any reply is probably not a good idea. Posters that put it up once a day and let the folks make up their own minds will get buried 2, possibly even 3 pages back, especially when football arrives and every breed of humanity crawls out of the woodwork. Some guys argument or running commentary will always be at the top. jmho

Books take beating as favorites go 11-4

Baltimore, Cincinnati, Indy blowouts hurt

By MATT YOUMANS

REVIEW-JOURNAL

On a rather ordinary day for San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, his team won by 33 points, emphasizing a point about how bad some teams really are at the bottom of the NFL.

Cleveland, Houston, Oakland and Tennessee all were demolished as double-digit underdogs. The results of their games were laughable for almost everyone but sports book directors, who prefer league-wide parity and unpredictable games.

“This week told me a lot about the NFL and what we’re dealing with here,” Las Vegas Hilton sports book director Jay Kornegay said. “There are some terrible teams in the NFL, and it seems like the parity has gone out the window.

“It’s frustrating on our end. It was a pretty bad day.”

The games that appeared to be mismatches turned out even more lopsided than anticipated.

“The players were right on the money. It was a brutal day for us, a day like I’ve never seen in all my experiences with Las Vegas sports books,” Sunset Station sports book director Micah Roberts said.

“It was definitely a black Sunday. It was a huge day for the players, to proportions I’ve never seen.”

The Chargers, 11 1/2-point home favorites, crushed the Titans, 40-7. Tomlinson rushed 19 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

But the most damaging games to the books kicked off early. Baltimore, Cincinnati and Indianapolis all won in blowouts, and public bettors played those three winners in parlays and teasers.

The Ravens, who closed as 13-point home favorites, coasted to a 28-6 victory over the Raiders.

The Bengals, 10-point home favorites, beat the Browns 34-17 as Carson Palmer passed for 352 yards and two touchdowns.

The Colts, 13-point home favorites, pounded the Texans 43-24 as Peyton Manning passed for 400 yards and three touchdowns.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation when you get beat up in the morning games,” Kornegay said. “That puts us in a significant hole right away.”

The only big underdog to cover was Kansas City, which was getting 10 1/2 points and lost to Denver 9-6 in overtime. The books also were helped by Buffalo, which beat Miami 16-6 as a 7-point road underdog.

Chicago, Dallas, New England and Seattle all covered as favorites laying about a touchdown.

The underdogs came out ahead in the opening week of the regular season, but favorites owned Week 2 with an 11-4 record.

Kornegay said oddsmakers might need to inflate the lines on teams such as the Titans, who opened as 10 1/2-point underdogs at Miami in Week 3.

Tennessee plays at Indianapolis on Oct. 8 and that spread is sure to be set at 14 points or more.

“The way these teams are going in opposite directions, I can see a 20- or 21-point spread in the NFL. I don’t think it’s too far away,” Kornegay said.

“You make adjustments, but you don’t want to overadjust. I don’t think you slow down the public from betting against the really bad teams. Everybody looked at the schedule this week and said, ‘Wow, look at all of those big numbers.’ But that didn’t slow them down.”
