Full-card selections, horse-by-horse analysis, and wagering strategies for
Breeders? Cup 2005
Saturday October 29, 2005
By Christopher Ado
Christopher Ado?s Breeders? Cup Best Plays:
(5) WEND (Race Five): The term brilliant is used loosely but it describes
this fillies first four starts on turf as she won each race by an average
margin of by more than five-lengths. After moving prematurely into a slow
fractions to score a hard fought win in the G2 New York Handicap over Film
Maker, Wonder Again, and Riskaverse, she could not handle the yielding
ground when sixth in the G1 Beverly D. She was freshened up and returned in
the G2 Winstar Galaxy as her final prep for the Filly and Mare Turf and lost
more ground than her three-quarter of a length margin of defeat would
indicate to miss her second G2 victory. A filly with natural tactical speed
she was unable to show it when she broke several lengths behind the field to
be away next-to-last. She got herself back into position while force to race
four to five wide into the first turn The Pulpit filly gradually moved into
contention in mid-pack while four wide down the backside and into the far
turn and put in a strong late rally in the final 110 yards to miss behind
the perfect trip gate to wire winner. She is drawn nicely in post five where
her tactical speed to be used her advantage and she can get first run on
closers. Her work on 10/24 was excellent while not being ask for her best
over yielding ground and appears set at generous 10-1 on the morning line in
her second start off the bench.
(4) BATTLE WON (Race Six): This horse won my admiration as legitimate
contender for this race when I made a trip to Del Mar on July 31 and saw him
finish second in the G1 Bing Crosby where he was best. He battled between
rivals through the fastest opening quarter and half-mile fractions on the
card. He put away his two pace rivals as they tired to finish sixth and
seventh, turned away a challenge from Top Commander, and stayed on gamely
through the stretch to be second best while well clear of subsequent G1
Vosburgh winner. He stretched out an additional furlong in the G1 Forego
last time out and saw him set a pressured pace with outsider Yankee Mon,
putting that rival away who tired to finish fourth, and was worn down by the
opportunistic perfect trip winner. He attempted to score his second win in
the Woodford Stakes last time, but got out of the gate last, rushed up to
sit behind contested battle for the lead, awaited for room that never
developed and split the field in a prep for this event. He has trained
strongly according to Handicapper?s Report who is expecting him to deliver a
smashing race in the Sprint and his ability to duel, lead, press, or sit
behind leaders gives this Honor and Glory gelding a big advantage as his
10-1 morning line is too good to pass up.
(3) BAGO (Race Nine): The European invasion brings such multiple Group 1
winners such as Azamour and Starcraft but last year?s Arc winner is set to
deliver a big race and prove to the entire world his dominance not only in
the Turf division in the North America but also prove to Europeans that he
is back in solid form. After winning his come back effort at Long champ, he
was plagued by back problems that compromise his chances in the Grand Prix
de Saint Cloud when a non-threatening third to Alkaseed. Despite another
third in the King George VI and QEII Stakes, Bago rebounded in trying to
defend his title in this Arc where he finished a better than looked third in
the highest rated turf event this year in Europe won by Hurricane Run. He
lost ground the entire trip while force to race wide over a rain deluged
turf course, shuffle back to last as the field entered the straight, angled
widest of all towards the middle of the turf course, and closed like a wild
rocket to finish twelve other horses to finish third. The Arc was a perfect
prep for this $2 Million event and with Shake the Bank entered all regular
jockey T. Gillet has to do is wait patiently to bide his horse?s late kick
and when the real running begins in the final three-furlongs unleash this
colt?s powerful late run at what appears to be a juicy 5-1 on the morning
line and I will take 7-2.
RACE 3: BC JUVENILE FILLES
FOLKLORE: A daughter of two-time BC Classic winner, TizNow, owns the highest
last race Beyer Speed Figure with a 99 in her victory in the G1 Matron last
time out. In that race, she contested an early pace that was faster than the
G2 Futurity run one race later, disposed of her early pace rivals, and widen
under a drive to score by fourteen lengths earning a Beyer Speed Figure that
is not only above par for this race also 18 points better than her previous
best speed figure. She has lost twice to her main rival, Adieu, but should
might have been best on August 26 after the stalking the dueling leaders
early and putting in a sustained run versus a main track favoring early
speed and finishing ahead of subsequent G3 Astarita winner, Sensation. Bred
to thrive as the distances increase, Folklore, has run fast enough to win
this race, has shown an affinity for this main track, and has the
tractability necessary to lead, press, or stalk the pace with a good late
kick. The only question now is will you get a price that fair enough for her
to turn the tables on Adieu?
ORIGINAL SPIN: Undefeated in two career tries and still has plenty room to
improve as she makes only her third career. She made her debut on Arlington
Million under card on August 13 and was impressive winner dueling with 16-1
Kiss It through brisk fractions that saw them set a 45.00-second opening
half-mile which was the fastest on the program. She disposed of her pace foe
who tired to finish eighth beaten 13-Ѕ lengths, opened up a clear lead past
mid-stretch, and was confidently ridden in deep stretch to win by a length.
Despite this visually impressive score, she was sent off at 5-1 in the
Arlington Washington Lassie and proved her versatility to a romping victory
in her first start winner. She sat the perfect trip behind two dueling
leaders, bided his time waiting for room around the turn, eased out three
wide into the stretch, and blew by the leaders to win going away earning a
career best Beyer Speed Figure of 86. Though her speed figure is below par,
the validity of that figure was confirmed when the runner-up, Ex Caelis,
returned to run second in the Alcibidas and fourth-place finisher, Jazzie
Okie returned to win a minor $40,000 Stakes. She will have to make another
step forward but if the price compensates for the risk, she deserves a
wager.
ALONG THE SEA: Since breaking her maiden as the post time favorite in her
career debut, this daughter of 1999 BC Juvenile winner, Anees, has been
higher than 12-1 in three subsequent starts but she has put forth a
deceptively strong efforts in each race. She took on Adieu and Folklore in
the G2 Spinaway on August 26 where her late rally was hampered by a main
track strongly favoring speed flattering her rally splitting two subsequent
next-time out winners. Whatever chance she had in the G1 Matron was lost
before the start when she broke through gate prior to the start and showed
brief speed to chase the dueling leaders and ran on evenly behind the
runaway winner in a final time that was faster than the G2 Futurity run one
race later. She took on Adieu once again in the G1 Frizette and was three
wide throughout chasing runaway leader, made a three wide move on the turn
to challenge the favored winner, and was second best. Like Adieu she has yet
to run a Beyer Speed Figure fast enough to indicate she can win this race,
but her honestly and consistent form makes her a must use underneath.
DIAMOND OMI: Since the blinkers were taken off and stretching out to two
turns, this Giant?s Causeway filly has found the green light as she has won
both of her starts around two turns. She broke her maiden on closing day of
the Del Mar meeting defeating subsequent next-time out winner Fun Logic in
the process verifying the strength of her maiden win. She stepped up to take
on the undefeated Wild Fit in the G2 Oak Leaf and sat a perfect trip
tracking trip while the favorite had to navigate a three wide journey
throughout. In that race, she made a quick move to grab the lead midway on
the far turn and held on gamely to win by three-quarters of a length
illustrating form cycle with the increase in distance. Although trained by
Bob Baffert who won this race in 1998 with Silverbulletday.
KNIGHTS TEMPLAR: Shipping in from Canada appears an intriguing long shot if
she can transfer her form to Belmont Park. She scored her first two wins
sprinting on the main track and after a turf debacle two starts back, she
switched back to the main track and delivered a smashing gate to wire
victory. She controlled a moderate early pace for the first half-mile, shook
away from the rest of the field midway on the backstretch, and won ridden
out earning a 93 Beyer Speed Figure that is well within range of par for
this race. The Exploit filly merits respect as she improved 12 points on the
stretch out from her previous best speed figure and she is capable of
sitting just off the pace as she did when she won the six furlong Ontario
Debutante by length and three quarters. The main concern regarding her is
her ability to handle pace pressure as she meets other speed from other
speedy rivals and can she handle that pressure and still produce a
performance equal to victory in a G3 last time out.
ADIEU: Cost a staggering $300,000 as a two-year old in training sales which
was the second highest priced filly from the 23 two-year olds by El
Corredor. This filly won her first two starts as the post time favorite and
suffered her first lost on opening day of the Saratoga. Run over a track
that has been sealed and re-harrowed during the middle of the card, this bay
filly had an eventful trip trying to handle the main track in her
fourth-place finish. She returned on August 26 in the G2 Spinaway and turned
the tables on Forklore defeating that rival by a length in a race that saw
the runner-up return to win the G1 Matron and the fourth-place finisher,
Sensation, returned to win the G3 Astarita. She proved in the G1 Frizette
that she can handle the off track with a two-length victory in her first
start beyond seven furlongs. The main question regarding this bay filly is
whether she is fast enough to win this race. Her career best main track
Beyer Speed Figure of 83 is well below the average winning Beyer required to
win this race (96 Beyer par). She has defeated her arch rival, Folklore, in
two of three meetings, but must prove she is fast enough to handle her and
the rest of her competition.
SENSATION: Stretches out beyond seven furlongs for the first time but she is
bred for the extra ground and her dangerous tactical speed can allow Eibar
Coa can allow place this filly any where near the early pace. The highest
priced of the 43 yearlings by Dixie Union in the Keeneland September 2004
sales, she was truly a ?Sensation? breaking her maiden in her debut and came
back to defeat winners versus a ?key? race field that saw the third-place
finisher, Dance Daily, and Capozzene returned to win. Not only was it a
strong field, but she was visually impressive as she was force to rate
behind horses sitting in last, waited for room to open up on the turn, split
rival, and won under a hand ride. This development gave his connections
confidence to enter her in the G2 Spinaway where she tried to rally versus a
speed bias in a race where the first two place finishers returned to win but
her trainer blamed himself for racing her too many times. She was given five
weeks between starts and the result was a visually impressive and fast
victory in the G3 Astarita making her record here at Belmont undefeated in
two starts. She dueled be

Tonight in the NFL, I’m gonig to play the KC/CLE under 42.5.
This is the time in about 10 years that I didn’t make it to Saratoga for
the Travers, so I’ll have to enjoy it at home. I really like The Cliffs

Jan 29, 2009 Uncategorized
Understand the Line. The betting line is not created each week based on
the skills of each team. The line is not an assessment of what the final
score will be, rather the line is set at a number which the oddsmakers
believe will draw even action on both sides of the game. In summary, the
line is set not on skill but the balance of money.
Read the Line. The oddsmakers provide handicappers and insiders early
access to the lines so they can measure the level of insider interest in a
game before opening the lines. Those early moves are key indicators of
professional opinions. Whereas late moves are generally just money moves
and not indicative of ’smart’ money but rather ‘public’ money. This is
more true in professional betting than college betting.
The best point spread teams always fall year over year. In the NFL, those
teams that perform the best as Favorites against the spread in one season
always falter in the next. In 1999 it was the Rams who covered the spread
most often and in 2000 they where crushed. In 2000, the Oakland Raiders
wore that title and fell to the middle of the pack in 2001 as point spread
performers. In 2001 it was the Chicago Bears that covered nearly every
game in which they where the favorite and in 2002 they where abysmal. In
2002 the Carolina Panthers won the title as the best performing favorite,
will they continue the trend in 2003?
Get more Value for your wagering. The world of the Internet has brought
competition to the world of sports gaming. The customer is the winner when
sportsbooks compete for business. When you have every sportsbook running
the same number on the game and one book offering a full refund of your
wager in the case of a NFL Shutout the choice is easy where you have to
place your wager. Some books even offer reduced vig on games, such as
Sportsbook.com who offers 5% vig on Fridays. Half price vig is the same
value as moving the number half a point. The 10% vig is such a factor when
betting 10 games a week that you have to take every opportunity to
mitigate its effect.
Be very cautious of home dogs in the NFL, most especially during Monday
Night Football. The numbers speak for themselves, Home Dogs dominated the
2002 season on Monday night.
The pointspread usually only affects between 10-15% of the NFL games. The
spread is more often a factor in college football betting. So, if one can
pick the winner of a game straight- up, the points won’t usually matter
one way or the other.
Watch those Coaches. The press will be sure to let you know when a head
coach is on the way out the door and then the domino effect kicks in. The
entire coaching staff starts lining up their next jobs and players start
looking for transfers. The result, repeated numerous times in the past, is
an almost unavoidable distraction and loss of focus in the ongoing
campaigns, often resulting in a string of pointspread defeats.
Always an edge: Proposition & Future Wagering. These days there are over a
hundred different ways to bet the games, from quarterback passing yards to
the longest field goal. With all the different ways to bet each week,
there are most certainly going to be inaccurate lines and opportunities.
The majority of the lines for these proposition wagers are statistical
based and little factor is placed on the current week’s player status.
Many sportsbooks simply copy the proposition bet lines from other shops,
but the edge can be found with the sportsbooks that originate all these
propsition wagers. Sportsbooks like Sportsbook.com are going to be the
first to put up their proposition wagers and have larger limits. Getting
the virgin line at opening with a large limit will allow you to capitalize
on all opportunities.
Winning is picking 50%. It is not because 50% is considered spectacular,
there are plenty of people that win 60% or 65%, in fact most of the top
handicappers well exceed 60% winning ratios. Picking winners is only half
of the key to success, the other half is money management. Streaks are
inevitable in any betting season and a smart wagerer will press a winning
streak and back off from a losing one. This strategy is difficult to
follow and its more about your feel of the game that the statistics. If
your racking up winners based on your own insight into the game, press
your wagers, exploit that feeling. But be careful, because as soon as you
lose that touch you need to pull back until you understand the teams
better. Don’t get destroyed by a losing streak. That is how you make money.
Bet the board or only your top selections? There are defiantly two schools
of though on how to spread your bankroll. Some believe in highly selective
wagering, while others believe in playing the board. The best strategy is
somewhere in the middle. Betting the board leaves the door open too much
to luck and the 10% vig will tear apart your bankroll. On the other hand
if you hold firm to just a few wagers a week, what happens when an
attractive card of 10 games shows up, how do you narrow down the list? So,
how can less be more? If you were selective and played five games per week
for 16 weeks (80 games), and managed the near-impossible trick of 70%
winners, it would calculate like this; 56 winners, minus the 24 losers,
equals +32 units. With the “juice” calculated, that’s roughly +30 units.
On the other hand, if you played 15 games per week for 16 weeks (240
games), and connected on 60% of those wagers, you’d be +48 units (144
minus 96), and after the “juice” would be approximately +38 units, far
ahead of the previous scenario.
Free Cash, Why Not? A few of the Internet sportsbooks are so large that
giving away One Million Dollars in free cash over the course of the year
is less than 2% of their marketing budget. Why shouldn’t some of that
money head in your direction? Skill based contests are going to be your
best chance to get a piece of the pie, where your knowledge of the game
probably gives you an edge over 90% of the other contest players, then its
just a matter of luck. The contests that are free to enter are easy
pickings that you should be playing at least one a week.
Get the Best Line. The smart gambler always shops around for the best
available price. After a season of betting over 200 games, a half a point
on those games can mean the difference between winning 50% and winning
65%. Almost 25% of all NFL games land on the number 3.
Collect Your Winnings. There is no worse feeling than having a great
season and having to chase your bookie for cash, but there is also nothing
greater in the world than beating your sportsbook and having the cash to
show for it on Monday morning. Insure that you bet with a large,
transparent sportsbook; one that is going to offer you complete security
both of your financial transactions and your payouts. Look for books that
have a long track record in the business and the customer numbers to prove
it. Most importantly, make sure your sportsbook is on top of their game.
Send them an email at 3 A.M., how long does it take to get a reply; start
a live chat session online, how informative are their clerks; pick up the
phone and call them at a busy hour, did you get put on hold, how friendly
and responsive where the clerks? If you get the right answers, its the
sign of a well oiled, well financed machine. On the other hand, if you
dont get the right answers now, imagine the difficulties down the road.
Know Your Sportsbook. 95% of the sportsbooks on the Internet are ‘mom &
pop’ businesses that operate with no formal corporate structure and from
countries with relaxed regulatory scrutiny. Of course a ‘mom & pop’
business may offer a bit more of the personal touch, it doesn’t have the
financial strength you require. You must demand a sportsbook that is
publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange. A public operation must
answer to its thousands of shareholders with fully certified and audited
financial statements. A London based corporation must have a full Board of
Directors who are each fully registered and are personally responsible for
the integrity of the operations. A company traded on the London Stock
Exchange is required by law to always maintain sufficient cash on hand to
meet all customer liabilities. In summary, a publicly traded company it
going to offer the customer full transparency of its operations and a path
for resolution should any problems occur.
Bye Bye to Bye Teams. That extra week off should give those teams plenty
of time to rest up, heal those bruises and get well prepared for their
next match. Not such great thinking. The reality is that the weeks are a
lot less strenuous, practice time is shorter and party time is longer.
Players don’t return at the peak of their game. The proof is in the
numbers. For the last three years Bye teams are only 40% against the
spread when playing non Bye teams.
Only bet as much as you can afford to Win!

Ok I think I just made a stupid play. I took the under in this game, mainly because Oak’s D has been playing ok the last few games and their off. just sucks…I think oak wastes a lot of time on drives and punts, punts, punts before they score…Hasslebeck and Alexander hurt plus the bad weather up in Seatle. Hope this one hits…
